Pipe Freeze Risk Checker

typical January low ~26°F
high risk

High freeze risk — insulate and take active steps on freezing nights.

  • Know where your main water shut-off valve is, so you can stop the water fast if a pipe bursts.
  • Before the first hard freeze, disconnect and drain garden hoses and cover outdoor hose bibs (spigots).
  • Insulate pipes in unheated areas — crawl spaces, garages, attics, and along exterior walls.
  • On nights below freezing, let a faucet drip slightly and open cabinet doors so warm air reaches the pipes.
  • For exposed or hard-to-reach runs, consider heat tape or pipe-heating cable rated for that location.
  • If you'll be away during a freeze, keep the heat on (at least 55°F) or have the plumbing drained.

An informational risk estimate from local winter climate normals — not a forecast or a guarantee. Steps are general guidance; call a plumber for at-risk plumbing.

This is a risk estimate only, not a diagnosis — every home is different, and a local pro can check your specific risk.

Every number here is an estimate from public data and general rules of thumb, worked from what you entered. It can be wrong, out of date, or not fit your home, and it is not professional advice, an inspection, or an offer. Confirm anything that matters with a licensed pro or the authority named on the page, and treat any decision as your own. We are not responsible for losses that come from relying on these figures.

How freeze risk works

The freezing threshold

Water lines are at risk when temperatures stay below about 20°F, and uninsulated pipes in unheated or exterior spaces freeze first. Colder local winters raise the baseline risk.

Why exposure matters

Pipes in crawl spaces, attics, garages, and along exterior walls lose heat fastest, so where a line runs matters as much as how cold it gets. The checker combines both into a risk level and prevention steps.
